Finally, an episode worth writing about

I haven't seen an episode this good in...well...I think it was Jan...no, okay, I can't remember when. Maybe I'm just all hyped up from hearing "Vide Cor Meum" from the movie, Hannibal. I love this piece and bought the soundtrack just so I could listen to it eleventy billion times. That's all I'll say here. The rest is under the cut.
For most of this season I've been very disappointed with the Dr. Jekyll serial killer arc. He was making the Miniature Killer look interesting and that says a lot. But tonight I actually liked it and you know why? Weddle and Thompson wrote the episode. And you know what else? They know what to do with Brass. This was the kind of Brass us Brass fans are used to: quality, not quantity. Still, there's something "off" with PG. I can't quite figure out what it is but his voice sounds rough and a couple of times, I thought he looked unwell. But then I noticed that JF had the same look and then I wondered if maybe they are filming early in the morning and neither PG nor JF are morning people. They looked a bit better later. Like the woke up. But PG's voice still sounds strange. Plus, he really has to unbutton his collar. Maybe that's what's giving him the pinched look. His collars are too tight.
So for all the I did like about this episode (Brass!), there were a ton of flaws, mostly having to do with the fact that the show has thrown out all the rules from previous seasons. It really comes down to the writers not giving a good crap about continuity. You know, things like cops clearing a house before the CSI's go in or CSI's gathering and processing evidence. Now the CSI's are super cops who do it all and the cops take direction from them. If a cop is even present at all. I really hate what they've done to Brass.
Some of the stupidity in this episode:
- No Brass to greet the CSI's and tell them the house is clear and who the dead people are and then disappear to go interview witnesses?
- No cops to clear the house when the find the front door unlocked with blood on the handle. No cops to go into the basement to find the creepy surroundings and eerie music? Even better, the cops are STANDING BEHIND the CSI's as they go through the front door. Please.
Some of the deja vu in this episode:
-The victim's house looked just like the one that smoking lady lived in from S7. She was the one who got too much nicotine or something like that.
-The dog barking incessantly outside the house reminded me of Shooting Stars. And this is the second dead German Shepherd they've had this season. Good that they can get their money out of the stuffed dead dog.
Best parts of this episode:
-Brass! He had some pretty decent screen time in this one and I loved his scenes in the hospital, especially where he's doing nothing more than standing around, observing Ray's temper tantrum. And I love when he's telling Ray to get over his bad self. Brass knows about that kind of stuff.
-Vide Cor Meum.
-Not one mention of Catherine and Vartann. Yeah, I admit it, I don't like Vartann. I especially hate that he's on the show maybe three episodes a season and he gets more backstory and screen time than Brass. As for the whole Catherine and Vartann relationship, my stepmother, a regular CSI viewer summed it up best: "where in the world did that come from and who is that guy?"
-As much as I hated the idea of CSI's clearing the basement, the tension was nicely done. I kept expecting the guy to pop out of a closet and scare the crap out of Nick, causing his eyebrows display his face of terror.

Date: 2010-04-10 04:12 am (UTC)Glad you liked Brass' input tonight. I too am thinking CSI screwed the pooch this season by not bringing Brass' more into the storylines and inner circle. He's been a key part of the show with other characters through each season. It makes no sense to me at all.

Date: 2010-04-13 02:19 am (UTC)I swear, sometimes I want to punch TV writers, especially the CSI writers, in the face. They really don't get it.
