Unleash the Fury

I'm off all of this week. I'm calling it my Spring Break because it always irks me that people with kids take off for Spring Break while those of us without kids don't. So I am. It's raining today--one of those perfect spring storms with rolling thunder and thankfully, no cloud to ground lightning. I love it! It's supposed to do this tomorrow too. Fine with me. I still need to do some yard work but I got the grass mowed yesterday so the yard looks so nice and green with the rain. I'm meeting a friend for lunch and have a couple of errands to run tomorrow but other than that, I have no plans during this break except maybe do some stuff around the house and yard, watch hockey and CSI (yay for Brass and Drops!) and write. It's the perfect vacation.
Ok, so back on April 11th, I got Caps playoff tickets to game 1 and game 2 of round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Game 1 was awesome! We had great seats at club level behind about five rowdy guys, some who held their alcohol better than others. One drunk guy started hitting on my friend and I during the 3rd period. My friend has this bad habit of talking to drunk guys. Oh, and thanks to the rowdy guys, I can now say yes, I have been on the Jumbotron and I never, ever want to see myself on the Jumbotron ever again. At least I wasn't stuffing a hot dog in my face, like my friend was.
Anyway, the game was awesome! Caps fell behind in the 2nd period 4-2 and lost the energy of the crowd but at the start of the 3rd period, the crowd was into it and the Caps came back and won, 5-4. Love abounded on the streets surrounding the Phone Booth and if you've ever been to DC, you know that's an unusual occurrence. We're generally irritable who curse at having to yield to pedestrians. But when the Caps win, we yield, we high-five perfect strangers, we actually even talk to strangers on the metro. We are united in Caps love.
As an aside, and an explanation to the subject line, there's a video they play during the third period whips the crowd into a frenzy. Here's the link to see it on YouTube. Unleash the Fury. This was the last game of the regular season, where the Caps won the SE Division. Listen towards the end of the video. The crowd is so loud, you can't hear the actual words. Personally, I think they need to play this in the middle of every period. It's definitely become a battle cry for the Caps.
Sunday's game was at 2pm and nationally televised so we were all ready to rock the red and feel the love again. Our seats were still at club level but on the other end of the ice and in a section full of poser fans (you know, fans who only cheer for the Caps because they made the playoffs). They had no enthusiasm at all. There were three guys in front of us, one of whom was so drunk that he threw up in his mouth (to keep from throwing up on the back of the person in front of him) and then left. Plus, there was an obnoxious Flyer fan right behind us and it didn't help that the Caps played like they'd never met each other before the game. They completed more passes to the other team than to their own and could never get the puck out of their own end. Interpret that as you may because it does have two meanings. They lost 2-0 and the love from Friday night disappeared like summer rain on hot asphalt.
One embarrassing loss and one heart-breaking double OT loss in Philadelphia for games 3 and 4 and the Caps were on the verge of being eliminated. Lose on Saturday and the season is over. Win and it's game 6 in Philly. I didn't go to game 5. I watched it on TV. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm insane because three times yesterday, I shouted SCORE! at the top of my lungs. The game was televised on NBC. We always lose when the game is televised on NBC so I wasn't very optimistic. But this is a team that seems to draw inspiration when their balls are against the wall. They came out playing Philly's game, being physical, being aggressive to the puck, screening Biron, sticking up for each other and generally not putting up with any of the Flyer's shit. They played like a team. Huet and the team were on fire! The crowd was on fire! The media, the coaches and the players talked about how loud Verizon was for Game 1. I have to think yesterday's game was three times that loud. It was freakin' loud on TV.
Game 6 is tomorrow night. It's going to be rough in Philadelphia but if the Caps play like they did yesterday, I have no doubt they can bring it back to the Phone Booth for Game 7 and win the series.
I believe.

Date: 2008-04-20 07:37 pm (UTC)I can't believe that you have mowed your lawn already. Ours is still under snow and what is bare is under water. It will be awhile yet before we can walk around the yard.
Hope your Caps win tomorrow.

Date: 2008-04-20 08:25 pm (UTC)It was 83 degrees here yesterday and the gnats were swarming because it was humid. I turned on the A/C. Today it's about 20 degrees cooler. I much prefer cooler.
I'll pull for a Red Wings - Caps final. We lost in OT to the Red Wings in the regular season.
