Oh, I completely agree with the "poor Nicky" crap. What tanks me is how they go on about what happened to "Nicky" in Grave Danger but nary a mention of what happened to Brass. I'm not saying the trauma of getting buried alive isn't bad but so is getting shot and nearly dying.

And can I just say that I really hate the name "Nicky". Not real fond of "Jimmy" either unless it's in the context of Annie or someone from New Jersey. What are these guys, twelve?

I won't get you started on Greg because then we'll both be all spun up and really, it won't be pretty (like Greggo's face--ugh).

Okay, so I'll admit I will not read GSR fics. It's not that it turns my stomach or anything, it just doesn't do anything for me and I won't waste my time on it. I've never read a Grillows story, but if you put a gun to my head and told me I had to write one or the other I think it would be Grillows. Hang on, hear me out...
When I watch CSI as a passive viewer and not one chomping for the next Brass bit, I see a lot chemistry between Grissom and Cath. Be it friendship/sexual/whatever, that doesn't matter--the fact that they really click on screen is what's important. However, I've always thought there was something going on between those two between the lines. And it seems natural....which brings me to GSR.
Where I see natural chemistry between Griss and Cath, the chemistry between Sara and Griss is written and therefore, to me, completely unnatural and forced. And for me it's not so much chemistry as tension which can make good storytelling, but I don't see it between them on CSI. And I can't stand the Sara character, she's whiney, complaining, always comparing herself with Nick (and vice versa for that matter), when she gets something she wants she still complains. And that's what she's supposed to be, I know; but I dislike people like that. And for me it seems more of a 'she wore Grissom down' rather than they're together for any strong mutual attraction.
So that's my rant about the GSR and Grillows stuff. I have more about my fav Brass, but only a minute of battery life left, so later....

In the first few seasons, I didn’t like Sara either for the same reasons you mention. I liked her a little better in S5 (except in Nesting Dolls) partly because the writers made Catherine into such a bitch and I couldn’t stand her. In S6 I liked all the women: Sara, Sofia after ABRTI, and Catherine.

My problem with Gil/Catherine is that I do see a strong friendship between them but absolutely zero sexual chemistry. I have a guy friend like that and we've never dated for the same reason but we're really close friends. With Grissom and Sara, I have to admit that I do see the UST and I see Grissom as much at fault as Sara. I think if Gum Drops had aired as originally written, there wouldn't be such a disconnect with WtG. In a way I do like the GSR because I don't much care for either character. However, to be totally honest, I have a hard time seeing Grissom in a relationship with anyone (Sara, Catherine, Nick, etc) because he’s always been so asexual to me.

As for the fic, the only reason I read any CSI fic, GSR, Grillows, slash or otherwise, is for Brass. If he’s featured prominently in the story and he’s not OOC or being called Jimmy by someone other than Annie Kramer or trapped in some godforsaken Mary Sue romp, I don’t care what ship it is. It just seems that I end up reading more GSR fics because the Grillows fics are so OOC to me. I also think I'm pickier when it comes to Catherine than I am with Sara.

Oh, and I’d like to add one more thing to my rant. I can’t stand it when people confuse the actors and the characters. WP is married. He is not married to JF. Seeing them stand together in a kitchen, cooking, is not the same as Grissom and Sara standing together in a kitchen. Looking at the actors as a couple is kind of scary. Almost as scary as writing a fic about yourself as Paul Guilfoyle’s girlfriend/lover.

Intrigued, but wary, I clicked on over to the above-mentioned fic. I read the first paragraph and my immediate physical response was to close it, but wanting to be impartial I had to go on. I skimmed until I got to the point where she bumps into PG, then skimmed more until the point she's in a trailer and talking on a cellphone and PG comes up...how did she put it? something like "Always a man of integrity and blah blah". Well, I'm sorry, that was my limit. I can only imagine (don't really want to but I'm sure infidelity is a large part of it) what comes over the next twenty (20?????) chapters. Um, yeah, that's the same Drae. Scary, huh? She also has a sekrit identity on YTDAW called Bruins Penalty Box but she gave herself away by posting as Drae. I don't think she's posted under that profile since.

As for the fic, it can only be described as a train wreck. You know it's bad and the images will scar your mind for life, but you have to look. I have a high tolerance for pain so I skimmed the last chapter. She's pregnant with triplets, all boys so of course, one will be named Paul Jr, after the actor-man who worships her cyan eyes. You know, this just reinforces why most fan fiction sites ban real people fics. They're just wrong on every level.

And I don't think PG's wife or family factored into her little warped universe because she makes no mention of them. That's not too surprising though because I don't think she even acknowledges that PG is married. I don't know if you ever saw it but she used to have this flaming Mary Sue fic over on ff.net that was almost as bad as her Drae/Paul fic. The woman was named Cyan because of her cyan eyes (of course), she had a high and tight hair cut and skate boarded to work. Everyone at the lab loved her to bits and naturally, the minute Jim laid eyes on her, he's head over heels in love with her. Um, yeah.

Over on TalkCSI there's a thread asking how old the posters were. I was amazed at how many are around 20 and even more around 15. TalkCSI has a huge membership so it's a pretty good demographic of the fanbase. Most 15-20 year olds aren't like I was (which is probably a good thing), they don't know who john steed is and they sure don't notice men over thirty or with grey hair. There're a lot of teenyboppers and 20sums that are posting and writing in the fandom and I think for the most part that's where the passing over of Brass comes in. Grissom gets their attention because he's the main guy involved with young pretty Sara, but mostly I see slathering over Nick and Greg; one more reason I don't read a lot of fanfic, and this is really snotty, is that most of it doesn't ring true and, well, sucks.
Sofia's lovely. End of story (okay, I wish she'd get sunnys other than aviators. Couldn't agree morea bout Vartann--he's foul.
It does bug that Brass always gets skipped over, but I'd rather that than reading piles of drivel that has him bang ooc. I can't think of much more horrible than a bunch of teens taking him under their wing and painting their version of Brass. I'm much more interested in what makeup the show's writers paint on him.
I'm looking forward to the start of the season. They've shown the first couple of eps of season 6 lately, and there were a handful of scenes with Nick regressing to his time in the box, and that's what I expect and hope they'll do with Brass. I'm thinking subtle stuff, like he's visibly tired, or his shoulder still twinges, other characters showing concern. That's the kind of stuff that will satisfy me. I'd love love love them to give him an unseen love interest. Maybe referenced here or there, a 2nd picture frame on his desk that we can't necessarily see the occupant but know it's a woman. Now would be the perfect time for it, he's just been shot, time to take stock of life.

It's gotten to the point where I've stopped reading CSI fics. I tend to be biased when it comes to who my favorite authors are--meaning they mostly write about Brass or feature him heavily in their fics.

My rant is when some fans describe Brass as a loveable father or grandfatherly type, yet Grissom is just plain sexy 'cause he's a really cool CSI and is an emotional enigma (among other details). Aren't they practically the same age? I just can't get over how ridiculous that sounds.

Oh and, I'm not a Vartann fan. I'm warming up to Sofia though. Okay, okay I do have to admit that her and Jim would eventually hit it off when Jim referred to her as Sofie in her first appearance on the show.

I also forgot about Jim referring to Sofia as Sofie in her first episode. How cute was that? I just hope she doesn't start calling him Jimmy. That's still reserved only for Annie.
