bunchofgrapes: (Brass - annoyed)

This is going to be my rant post. I'm ranting about CSI because apparently, I have nothing better to do.

I hate when writers label fics "Grillows of course". Why "of course"? I'm not a huge GSR fan but I definitely prefer it over Grillows. The idea of Catherine and Grissom together kind of squicks me out because I've never read a Grillows fic that doesn't make them sound like Ken and Barbie. And Catherine preggers just makes me ill. I mean, the woman is supposed to be 43 or so. But nooooo, she can be pregnant on the first try and have a perfectly normal kid.

Why does everyone always skip over Brass? He's been in the series since day one and yet, when there's a list of the characters, he's always left off. Okay, so the guy isn't "pretty" but you know, some of us don't like pretty. Personally, if Brass was ever described as pretty, I think I'd throw up.

Okay, so I get that there's all this Sofia hate in the fandom. All the GSR fans resent her because she was brought in to steal Grissom away from Sara. Well, GSR is canon and Sofia's a detective now. Give it rest. I like her as a detective. I like her working with Brass. For the record, I don't want to see more Vartann and I don't think he's remotely hot. He's got this Frankenstein forehead thing going on that scares me. I don't get why people are all pissy about her stealing screentime from Brass but not pissy about the other male detectives stealing his screentime. Personally, I don't want Brass to lose screentime to anyone but if I had to pick, I'd take Sofia. At least they work together and have some sort of flirty vibe going on.

I probably have more rants but these are the few that bubbled over today. Feel free to add your own.

I really don't like any of the Sara is pregnant and Grissom, Greg, or Nick, don't know it fics. Haven't these people heard of birth control? They are suppose to be intelligent. I'm also tired of all of the poor Nick talk and how he and Sara have had the hardest times. Hello....what about Brass. He leaves NJ because he turned in bad cops, and his wife divorces him after having a kid by someone else. He has to deal with Ellie, he killed a cop, and he has been shot. I guess that doesn't qualify as having it hard. Don't even get me started about all the Greg talk.

Jimmy.

don't get me started on that. I freakin' HATE (strong, yes) when I see posts whose authors call him that. Just gets me totally creeped out...

Okay, so I'll admit I will not read GSR fics. It's not that it turns my stomach or anything, it just doesn't do anything for me and I won't waste my time on it. I've never read a Grillows story, but if you put a gun to my head and told me I had to write one or the other I think it would be Grillows. Hang on, hear me out...
When I watch CSI as a passive viewer and not one chomping for the next Brass bit, I see a lot chemistry between Grissom and Cath. Be it friendship/sexual/whatever, that doesn't matter--the fact that they really click on screen is what's important. However, I've always thought there was something going on between those two between the lines. And it seems natural....which brings me to GSR.
Where I see natural chemistry between Griss and Cath, the chemistry between Sara and Griss is written and therefore, to me, completely unnatural and forced. And for me it's not so much chemistry as tension which can make good storytelling, but I don't see it between them on CSI. And I can't stand the Sara character, she's whiney, complaining, always comparing herself with Nick (and vice versa for that matter), when she gets something she wants she still complains. And that's what she's supposed to be, I know; but I dislike people like that. And for me it seems more of a 'she wore Grissom down' rather than they're together for any strong mutual attraction.
So that's my rant about the GSR and Grillows stuff. I have more about my fav Brass, but only a minute of battery life left, so later....

Can't say I've ever read or looked for any real life fics about anyone, but just the fact that they exist does disturb.

Intrigued, but wary, I clicked on over to the above-mentioned fic. I read the first paragraph and my immediate physical response was to close it, but wanting to be impartial I had to go on. I skimmed until I got to the point where she bumps into PG, then skimmed more until the point she's in a trailer and talking on a cellphone and PG comes up...how did she put it? something like "Always a man of integrity and blah blah". Well, I'm sorry, that was my limit. I can only imagine (don't really want to but I'm sure infidelity is a large part of it) what comes over the next twenty (20?????) chapters. But the deed is done, somewhere in the back my mind is reeling over what sick imaginations there are out there.
I need to be cleansed. You have hit upon the perfect thing to get my lazy arsed muse back.
Oh, and can I say, that this morning, after mulling all this over and rereading your post, I had a good long laugh over the phrase train wreck that real life fic is. Couldn't agree more.

is this the same Drae that is on YTDAW, who was modelling the hockey shirt she had specially made rather than bidding on a charity one that he had actually worn? And who won't call her computer Paul because that seems "weird"?

I will NOT rubberneck. I will NOT rubberneck.

That's hilarious. Triplets, but god forbid she call her computer Paul coz it's inappropriate. Can I comment on her story? Please? Do you think she'd go off the rails? I wonder how she won him over from his wife and family. I'm giggling so much tears are almost running down my face. I really don't try to be mean, but geez.

Well, sleeping dogs and all that, I'm a coward at heart...

I'll stop spamming your journal now. I just can't help it though. he's just so delish.

I hope you don't mind me butting in but I found this and the rest of your convo intensely amusing.

She gave herself away? Seriously? I must've not have been around to witness that. Though, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

I remember skimming the first chapter of that fic and found I just couldn't go on after that. Hmm, and here I thought cyan eyes were only found in Anime characters and whatnot.

I remember that one. Wasn't it called Cyan Chronicles or something such as that? Good times.

And, what is up with that? Oooh, a mysterious benefactor is "donating" Bruins paraphanelia, and suddenly she has too much of it that she's got no clue as to what to do with it. Weird.

Over on TalkCSI there's a thread asking how old the posters were. I was amazed at how many are around 20 and even more around 15. TalkCSI has a huge membership so it's a pretty good demographic of the fanbase. Most 15-20 year olds aren't like I was (which is probably a good thing), they don't know who john steed is and they sure don't notice men over thirty or with grey hair. There're a lot of teenyboppers and 20sums that are posting and writing in the fandom and I think for the most part that's where the passing over of Brass comes in. Grissom gets their attention because he's the main guy involved with young pretty Sara, but mostly I see slathering over Nick and Greg; one more reason I don't read a lot of fanfic, and this is really snotty, is that most of it doesn't ring true and, well, sucks.
Sofia's lovely. End of story (okay, I wish she'd get sunnys other than aviators. Couldn't agree morea bout Vartann--he's foul.
It does bug that Brass always gets skipped over, but I'd rather that than reading piles of drivel that has him bang ooc. I can't think of much more horrible than a bunch of teens taking him under their wing and painting their version of Brass. I'm much more interested in what makeup the show's writers paint on him.
I'm looking forward to the start of the season. They've shown the first couple of eps of season 6 lately, and there were a handful of scenes with Nick regressing to his time in the box, and that's what I expect and hope they'll do with Brass. I'm thinking subtle stuff, like he's visibly tired, or his shoulder still twinges, other characters showing concern. That's the kind of stuff that will satisfy me. I'd love love love them to give him an unseen love interest. Maybe referenced here or there, a 2nd picture frame on his desk that we can't necessarily see the occupant but know it's a woman. Now would be the perfect time for it, he's just been shot, time to take stock of life.
Well that's my Brass rant, there's more, but I tend to digress too much when I pontificate about him...

It's gotten to the point where I've stopped reading CSI fics. I tend to be biased when it comes to who my favorite authors are--meaning they mostly write about Brass or feature him heavily in their fics.

My rant is when some fans describe Brass as a loveable father or grandfatherly type, yet Grissom is just plain sexy 'cause he's a really cool CSI and is an emotional enigma (among other details). Aren't they practically the same age? I just can't get over how ridiculous that sounds.

Oh and, I'm not a Vartann fan. I'm warming up to Sofia though. Okay, okay I do have to admit that her and Jim would eventually hit it off when Jim referred to her as Sofie in her first appearance on the show.

Yeah, I forgot about that too. I find it I can't get through a fic if Jim and Grissom manage to get into a knock down drag out fight over Sara's affections, that or consider their friendship to be over.

Eeesh, I agree with [livejournal.com profile] tos_lover's rant about anyone calling him Jimmy--other than Annie. I can't stand it. I hope Sofia doesn't refer to him as Jimmy either.
