Welcome back, CSI
Sep. 22nd, 2011 12:00 amI haven't enjoyed a CSI episode this much in at least a couple of years.
I'm really liking DB and his approach to the team, including Brass. His "73 seconds. The time it took for you to size me up, which is pretty good because he's still working on it" line to Nick and Brass' expression was hilarious!
And speaking of Brass, PG looks great! He has hair again (still short but you can actually see it) and his voice sounds less raspy than it did the past couple of seasons.
The scene between Brass and Doc Robbins about Ray was interesting. Obviously, Brass thought Ray was justified in killing Haskell so I doubt he has any regrets with what he did. And Paul really does look good again. He seems to be over whatever was ailing him. Maybe it was just boredom because he seems to be back to the pre-Ray Brass again.
DB's wife calling to ask about farmers markets in Vegas and the blank stares he gets from Nick and Catherine was priceless. I love that we now have a happily married character on CSI (Doc R doesn't count).
Not a whole lot of Brass in this one but with a couple of interrogation exceptions, he's where he needs to be. I especially liked his facial expressions when he and DB were talking to the Japanese woman who lost her octopus. I really hope Brass gets along with DB the way he did with Grissom. At least the dialog and body language between the two actors seems much more relaxed than it did between PG and LF. PG never looked comfortable around LF with maybe explains why Ray and Brass rarely worked together.
When Brass was talking to the Japanese woman, did anyone catch what he said when she said "I don't like getting shot"? Because it sounded like he said "Who does? I didn't like getting shot".
I liked the tension between Nick and Catherine at the end. Too bad all conflict can't be resolved with breakfast. Personally, it was nice to see Nick "I have perfect but scary eyebrows" Stokes getting called out by the new guy. I like the old Nick, the one who's a little naive and isn't always perfect.
Also, I wonder if the B case with the air hose was based on an incident that happened several months ago to a truck driver in New Zealand. He blew up like a balloon but didn't die.

Date: 2011-09-22 02:00 pm (UTC)You did hear Brass say he didn't like getting shot. But I wasn't sure if he was mimicking her or if he was really speaking about himself. Loved how DB just changed course on him and left him standing there trying to figure things out. DB did that to him a few times. Befuddled Brass is cute.
Another thing I noticed with Brass' voice... he's speaking more normally. I can't quite put my finger on it but it was like he was speaking more intelligently... his vowels coming through more clearly. It sounded more like the education that PG received than the Brass Jerseyness. Don't know what was up with that but I liked it. They've always tried to dummy Brass down. The tonal quality was much better too. Wonder what PG did in the off season to bring that out?
Anyway, I'm more excited than I have been in several years about the show.

Date: 2011-09-22 02:16 pm (UTC)As for PG's voice, when he wasn't looking so good back in S10, a friend pointed out that his lisp was much more pronounced, making him sound kind of...off. I didn't notice it back in March - he sounded pretty normal then - so I hope now he's completely recovered from whatever he was dealing with.
