bunchofgrapes: (Brass - Playing the Hero)

Before I get to my actual post I feel the need to rant about Firefox for a moment. I don't know what the heck is going on but ever since I upgraded to their latest version, the damn thing has been crashing on start up. It doesn't like loading sites that have never had an issue before and now I can't load the Caps website on start-up or the Brass Forum. Never had a problem with the previous version. So, except for IE (hate it), what browser do you use and do you like it?

I went to the hockey game Thursday night so I didn't get to watch CSI until last night. I wasn't looking forward to this episode all that much but it had enough Brass to keep me interested. Yeah, I'm shallow. I watch CSI for Brass. When he's not in an episode, I only watch it once. However, I like Nick and other than Brass-centric episodes, Nick-centric episodes are the only other single character episodes I can watch. I'm not sure about Ray. I really like the character (his voice at the end of the episode telling me to stay tuned is just lovely) so I probably would like a Ray-centric episode. Just depends on the writing. I think Ray is probably an emotional guy like Nick and to some extent Brass. Except that Brass is the poster man for guy's who hide behind a tough exterior. I don't see Ray as tough--yet. Nick tries to act tough but he's more emotional. Brass has broken down maybe three times and I think the last time (when he thought he was responsible for a witness getting killed) was more about Bell's shooting than anything else.

Nick is the guy who cries. Brass didn't cry when he knew Willie Cutler was going to shoot him. If it had been Nick in that situation, yeah, I could see him squeezing out some tears. Don't get me wrong though. I'm okay with Nick crying because he's emotional that way. He's always been the guy who cries. He does it well and in this episode, yeah, he made me cry. I think Ray was the catalyst but it was Nick's break down that got to me. I like when a character can make me cry. It means I'm invested in what happened to them, in their emotion. They made me care. There are a couple of shows that can do that on a regular basis (CSI rarely does it for me) and I like it. That's one of the reasons I watch those other shows. I like the outlet. Work stress is like a tight leather glove right now.

Wow, this was quite a tangent.

Okay, so after all that, I quite liked this episode. Much more than I thought I would. Don't know that it's a keeper, even with the little Brass scene. I need the DVR space. So, here's what I got out of it:

Vartann needs to ease up on the hair gel. He's got a little Something About Mary thing going on in the front. You have to have seen the movie to know what I mean.

So wife/mom who I didn't like when she was in Gentle, Gentle says to Brass, "Do you have any idea what it's like to lose a daughter?" Um, yeah, Jim does. Because for all we know Ellie's dead. Or maybe they forgot he has a daughter. That counts as losing a daughter, right? Jim's two second reaction tells us he knows exactly what it's like but it's when Nick bows his head that we know Nick's reaction is entirely because he feels for Jim. This made me feel for Jim too because he's got to sit there and act like he doesn't know what it's like. He has to act like cops are immune to the pain of life and to kids who might not be dead but are very lost. So Nick reacts for him. I loved that single moment more than any other in this episode. If they made this the Nick and Jim show, I'd be so cool with that.

Giving coffee guy $5 and then seeing how he turned his life around was a nice moment. I liked how they did this too, going back 365 days and then moving the timeline forward. Nice shout-out to Warrick. And speaking of that, I wonder if part of why this hit Nick so hard was because of what happened to Warrick. Nick said that if he'd solved the Tanya crime then maybe he could have saved Haley. If he hadn't been sitting in the diner, flirting with the waitress, maybe he could have saved Warrick. Life is all about If I'd only's. If I'd only bought the winning lottery ticket...

The one thing I hated about this episode was the lighting. It was dark and all but the lighting in the interrogation room was horrible, especially for PG's scenes. He doesn't look very good in gray light. And they were doing that funky, make everyone dark but shine the sunlight(!) directly on Nick's face, thing. I swear, when they did that I heard angels sing. Ok, maybe it was just the voices in my head but still.

I have to thank Taylor Swift for a song I just downloaded. The song on her video clip, the one where PG is saluting and making faces, is called "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon. I heard it and had to have it. Thanks Taylor!

And [livejournal.com profile] givengo, I know when you read the title, you said it completely in character.
