Fics, Deep Voices, and Rants, oh my!

So "Cancun" won a fanfic award. Yeah, that definitely made my day! My thanks to everyone who read it and anyone who voted. I saw the list of nominations; I know it was in excellent company.
So Nightline has this bit about why women (me, for example) have a preference for men with deep voices. Can I just say duh? Why do they think I love Richard Basehart (he was "The Voice" before James Earl Jones was "The Voice") or Paul Guilfoyle? Or my last boyfriend, Alan. He was a doof but he had an amazing voice that immediately caught my attention. For the record, it was PG's voice that caught my attention and made me want to find its owner. The love just took off from there. Nightline report says men with lower voices have greater reproductive success. I'll buy that. Both PG and RB fathered kids when they were in their late 40’s/early 50’s. So did James Earl Jones for that matter. Oh, and I have a thing for hairy chests as well. I know TMI...
And can I just say that I’m so freakin’ sick of people saying every older guy/ younger woman relationship is because she’s got daddy issues? I seriously want to bitchslap these people, especially when they say "it's classic textbook psychology". My last boyfriend, Alan, was 19 years older than me. I have a father, also 19 years older than me. I’m a mature adult who isn’t out to find another daddy nor am I after older guy's money. I'm doing just fine on my own, thanks.
I did not pursue Alan because I needed a daddy or had daddy issues. If anything, I was the parent in the relationship. Some of us who date/marry older men just happen to like older men. I always have (my first crush was Rex Harrison--when I was 5 years old). I like that they have gray hair and deep voices and weathered (not leathered) faces. I like that they have a sense of maturity about them (well, some do) that I don’t find in younger men. I like older men but I’ll tell you, when I first fell for Alan, I had no idea how old he was. I knew he was older than me and I was actually a little disappointed when I found out how much older but I really liked him so that didn't matter. And that's the key. Usually, we are attracted to who we are attracted to. We look first and get the details later. There was another guy after Alan and he is 18 years older than me. I liked him the moment I met him (um, he's another one with an incredible, deep voice) and he liked me and though nothing ever really came about (there's a distance issue), we became great friends. But no way would I say "wow, you're 18 years older than me? K, thanks, have a nice life". If I like him, I like him. And just for the record, the only time he drives me crazy and ticks me off? When he starts going all paternal on me.
So, stupid people on various fandom boards, I don't care what your psychology books tell you or what your best friend's aunt's cousin's sister says. Each person is different. Don't generalize and tell me that every older guy/younger girl relationship is because we all have daddy issues.

Date: 2007-10-14 08:30 pm (UTC)I think I remember reading that you and your hubby had a 20+ year age difference. Congrats to you both!

Date: 2007-10-15 10:47 am (UTC)As for the daddy/daughter thing - I agree. I mean, I'm into George Clooney and Johnny Depp. Meow.

Date: 2007-10-14 08:45 pm (UTC)So? Good voices: Donald Sutherland, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Ross Gordon, Tom Baker, John Larroquette, Alan Rickman, Michael Ansara, Clancy Brown, William Daniels--I could go on and on!
Not a spring chicken in the group, either!

Date: 2007-10-15 01:23 am (UTC)Alan Rickman has a super sexy voice.

Date: 2007-10-14 09:43 pm (UTC)I just can't stand it when people want to know why.
Oh and, congrats on your fanfic award. I loved that fic and you definitely deserve the recognition.

Date: 2007-10-14 09:52 pm (UTC)I wanted to throw my $.02 in here on the older man thing. My husband is 23 years older than I am. Seems excessive? Not so much. I was at a place in my life where I didn't need any more crap from guys my age and he was there - with is laid back, stable, faithful self. And I don't regret a minute.
As for people on the fan boards - if they can't look at Gris/Sara together and understand then they have issues. And if their problem is Sara being with Grissom - then they are worse than blind (the man is seriously hot and obviously crazy about her). Who cares what they think since they are challenged on many levels.

Date: 2007-10-15 01:55 am (UTC)You know, I'm not what I'd call a big Grissom/Sara fan but I do like the pairing, even more this season because Grissom is so cute about it. It was obvious from the start that Sara liked him and it wasn't because she wanted a daddy figure (please no, I do not see Brass in that role either). Sara's a big girl fully capable of making her own decisions. She sees a guy she likes and she goes after him. I could completely relate. I pursued Alan for several years before we actually went out and even then, I had to ask him.

Date: 2007-10-14 11:32 pm (UTC)Yeah, I've always had a thing for older men. You know Steed was my first ever TV crush and it lasted forever. To me, it's all in the package, usually they're more learned, confident and mature. Granted Bri is only 5 months older than me, but he acts (and looks ;)) like he's 50. People can't believe it when they find out we're the same age.
I can't stand it when people bang on about daddy issues. Believe it or not, people are all different and why I like older men has nothing to do with what the psychology books say. *eyeroll*

Date: 2007-10-15 03:31 am (UTC)Ah, Steed. *sighs* He was definitely one of my top 3, if not my #1, TV crush only because it seems like I crushed on him forever.

Date: 2007-10-15 12:32 am (UTC)My husband is 16 years older than me. We've been married for 32 years. Some people just have to find something to harp about and then try to act important by bringing up a psychology book.
I love the deep voice also, and my husband has one. I think Sgt. Preston might have been my first crush. I know, I'm old!!! But geez, he was a Mountie, he had a great dog, King, and a horse named Rex. Just about what any girl would want. Then Admiral Nelson/RB came along and no one could match up to him.

Date: 2007-10-15 02:15 am (UTC)And yeah, I know what you mean about the voices--Oded Fehr grabbed me that way. Yum.

Date: 2007-10-15 03:45 am (UTC)I had to check IMDB to see who Oded Fehr was and then one specific credit caught my eye: "UC: Undercover. Hee!
Now that I'm onto this voice thing, I'm noticing a definite pattern. If I made a list of my top 10 TV men, all of them would have voice as a huge part of the attraction.

Date: 2007-10-16 01:54 pm (UTC)Hey, does Mr. Guilfoyle do commercials?
no subject
Date: 2007-10-25 01:21 am (UTC)Yes, I believe he has done commercials. I have two demo .wav files that a friend stumbled across on the internet that are snippets of him doing various commercials, some in different voices. I have them on my iPod now.
I'm also convinced he did the voice of Captain America in a Justice League Visa commercial a couple of years ago, especially after hearing his commercial sound bites.

A little late
Date: 2007-11-12 11:32 am (UTC)Im spending a day off here, keeping out of the rain, probably staying in my pyjammas, and catching up on some journal reading. And now, adding 'Brassfics' to my plans. *Grins*
Do you mind if I 'add' you to my journal? Its Gracie by the way. Incase you're wondering who this 'rambler' is. My journal isn't much yet. Im hoping to get into the habit. Yours is rather inspiring, and its nice to have these things on my 'friends' page.
OK.. longwinded again. But Congratulations. Im off to do some reading. Have a good one!
