Old School CSI and Other Stuff
Now that it's hockey season CSI gets bumped in favor of Caps' games. Thursday night I kind of wish I'd watched CSI over the Caps because they choked against Boston. Luckily, they found their game last night against Atlanta.
I watch the hoarding shows on TLC and A&E. They are kind of like a train wreck to me so I can definitely see how there could be a dead body in a house. However, hoarders know their stuff. I can see the body being buried under stuff but lying on top? I can't quite buy that. I can however buy them coming into the house and finding a very tidily dressed Mrs. Santiago because I've seen episodes where the person living in the house has a very neat and tidy appearance but their house is a disaster. I remember one episode where a woman was dating a hoarder (she didn't know he was one) and was shocked when she finally went to his house because he'd always been so well dressed. I do have to say that like Nick, after I watched these shows, I would go and empty out a closet or drawer or box in the house. However, on CSI it seems like they combined two types of hoarders: the type that can't get rid of anything and lets it pile up in mounds all over the place and the type that can't let go of memories or items of their past but neatly stack them all over until there's no place to move. My great aunt was like that. She had neatly stacked rows of items all over her house so that there was just a path to get by. I remember hearing that when she died, they couldn't get the stretcher back to where she was because the path wasn't wide enough. Anyway, enough about hoarding.
This really was a good episode from an old school CSI stand point and while it's a little sad, I did kind of like seeing the new trifecta (Nick, Sara, Greg) that has replaced the old (Grissom, Brass, Catherine). Ray was tolerable in this and I didn't remotely miss Catherine. If this is the kind of episode they can turn out without her, bye-bye Marg.
I liked Sara in this too. I liked that she and Nick bickered and that they made up at the end without saying I'm sorry. They both had their view and while I did think Nick was getting ahead of the evidence and was being kind of an ass, I thought it made him more likable. I hate when he acts like Mr. Perfect CSI. Or maybe I hate that the Nick fans think he's Mr. Perfect CSI so it was nice to see them have to come to grips with Nick being an ass. At least we got to see Nick and Sara make up, so to speak. We're either to assume Brass and Catherine made up or they are still mad at each other. Who knows.
One thing about this episode that kind of confused me at first was that the actor playing the son and the daughter's name were from the episode, "Harvest". For a second there I wondered if this was supposed to be the same family but I quickly figured it out.
On to Brass. The hand they show putting down a picture in front of the son wasn't PG's. That always bugs me. Is his hand not camera worthy? Was his hand not available that day? WTF?
Brass really only had two scenes in this episode and he didn't do anything noteworthy so I will now rant about the one thing that continues to bug the crap out of me: his hair. Or lack of hair. Who in their right mind thinks this practically-shaved-head look is good on him? I get that he's got a receding hair line. Judging from what I've seen of him in his early roles, he's probably had it since he was ten. But he still has hair and he desperately needs that hair to balance out the rest of his face. There's a close up of Brass where he's talking to the brother and he really does look pretty good (older, yes, but good) and it's because you can't see his hair. Please, please, please, bring back his hair. At this point, I would welcome the comb forward of S1. It's become that desperate.
Then again, I was telling
spottedhorse that I believe the length of PG's hair is equal to his screen time.
One positive un-hair related thing that I will say: Brass looked good in the suit. I really liked that shirt and tie and the jacket itself looked to be expensive. Very nice!
Now onto something completely different.
I have three new favorite shows. One is Raising Hope. Seriously, this show is hilarious, mostly thanks to Cloris Leachman. One is Modern Family. This show is laugh out loud funny and all the characters are great but I have to say that it's Cam I love the most (Manny is a close second). Eric Stonestreet (formerly, Ronnie Litre, QD on CSI) won an Emmy this year and deservedly so. The last one is Parenthood. I love, love, love the 1989 movie with Steve Martin. It's a movie I can watch every time it's on. I knew that I wanted to watch the TV the minute I saw the previews. I can't say what it is exactly that makes me love the TV show so much but I do. Sure, there are characters on there who bug the hell out of me but that's to be expected with an ensemble cast. But there are some I just love to pieces. I think it's actually sets of characters that I love: Crosby, Jasmine and Jabbar, and now Sarah and Billy Baldwin's character, Gordon. I've never thought much about any of the Baldwin brothers but I could have a thing for Gordon. I hope he sticks around.
Tucker update: he's on new medicine for the spasms. It took me a couple of tries to get it mixed so that it goes into a syringe but I finally got it right and he's been doing great over the last couple of weeks. This is good because a few weeks ago he wasn't doing so good and I'd reached my stress limit and I'd decided that if he couldn't get better, I was going to have to put him down. I don't know that I would have gone through with it but his quality of life wasn't very good at the time and I couldn't see him constantly suffering through this. He was miserable and I was miserable for him. Thankfully, we seem to have found the right meds and for the last couple of weeks, he's been acting like a completely different cat. Honestly, the change is pretty amazing and it tells me just how miserable he's been. The vet also gave Tucker a prescription for Xanax so the next time I have workmen in, I can give him one of those and hopefully, it won't stress him out and cause this whole cycle to begin again.
Speaking of workmen, trying to get someone in to do work on my house is a huge pain in the ass! I have the money to do the upgrades and I have the name of another contractor who is supposed to be good. Unfortunately, this whole process is moving about as fast as slugs screwing. My other contractor was good but trying to get his time was next to impossible and I don't want to wait until 6 months for him to find the time again. The new contractor finally called me but now we are playing phone tag. It sucks because my house really needs to be painted but I can't paint until I get this other work done. Unfortunately, I live in an area where good contractors are in constant demand.
Oh, and can I just say that watching football isn't nearly as fun when you're not betting in a pool of some kind?

I agree, the Nick/Sara scenes were definitely old-school and good to see again. It was like...two or three seasons ago. Except they're giving Brass the worst lines.
It was the first time in eleven seasons that Sara laughed out loud...

Seriously! It's like they neutered him.
I was watching a couple of episodes from the first half of last season and his lines and delivery were good and snarky - very Brass-like. Starting with the second half of last season and continuing into this season it's like they forgot how to write for the character. I'd love to know what PG did to piss them off.

The thing that I keep thinking lately is how intelligent he is. Grissom was supposed to be the "Book smart" one and Brass the street smart one. In reality, PG seems to be way ahead of the rest in the intellectual department. I remember reading an article about him where the author mentioned that he was currently reading some really obscure but complex philosopher. The guy is obviously good with languages. I've seen interviews where he was speaking in the interviewer's native tongue, easily. So we have this really smart guy who is getting the dumbest lines. Wake up people and give the man something to work with!
And I thought happily they were going to let his hair grow a little and even commented on it. But then in this episode, he shows up with the shaved look again. Reminded me of Nick a couple of seasons ago. But then Nick is looking pretty shiny on top these days too. I wonder if it is some symapthy thing they are doing in support of someone on the crew that has cancer or something. Whatever the reason, ugh! Grow some hair guys.
As for the episode, it was the best I've seen in ages. This one, along with a couple of others already this season, give me hope that the show is back on the right track. Now if they could just give Brass some good stuff!
Dare we hope for this week's effort?

As for PG, the next time you're in a book store, check out a book called "The Poem I Turn To". PG has a section in there and in it he talks about how he worked on Homer's Iliad and Odyssey in Latin and Greek for six years and he published a translation of Horace's An Ode to Phyrrus. So, yeah, the guy's no slacker. And I suspect he needs to be challenged or he gets bored.
Speaking of Nick, I wonder if he's not shaving his head because of how gray he's getting. Or maybe it's because he's receding on the sides. Or maybe he and PG have some sort of pact to irritate the viewers.

Raising Hope. This one I have seen! Hilarious! I saw a preview, and just had to see it.
And of course Modern Family. Ronnie Litre! I'd forgotten about him.
Glad to hear things are going well with Tucker. Poor kitty. It's so hard when we have to make those sorts of decisions. I'm glad you didn't have to go through with it.
Good luck with the contractors. I'm married into a 'construction' family. Which means we're STILL waiting on things to get done. Things that we started 7 years ago. Arrgh! I'm threatening hubby boy with giving up entirely, and just buying a house with everything done the way we want it already. The sad thing is, he thinks that might be the only way we'll EVER get our bathroom finished. *Sighs*

Glad Tucker is better. Quality of life is all important :-)

I have to refer you to rant I made in this post a while back. It pretty much sums up what I think about that.
As for the Brass and Grissom friendship, you forget that the writers had Brass finding out that Grissom was leaving through the grapevine. I don't believe Brass has even acknowledged that Sara is back so the odds of them playing off each other are pretty much nil.

And as for Brass and Sara, I never saw the fatherly thing that others did. And he just seemed to accept her return without blinking an eye. Of course, that could be chalked up to more idiot writing.
One thing I hope we see this season is the writers actually picking up some of the loose threads that they dropped the last couple of years, remembering the things that have happened in the past with our characters. It is pretty bad when we know the show's canon better than the writers do.

As far as Griss and Brass, I think the writers just didn't care enough to keep that relationship consistent, which pisses me off to no end. There was just too much interplay in older epis to blow off in WP's last season. The only excuse I can give the writers is that I think the enitre group saw much less of Grissom and Sara once they got toether and less still after Sara was abducted. Hopefully this made some sense, because I am glad you continue to remind me why Brass is such an integral part of the GSR dynamic. And why I think PG will always hold a soft spot in my heart :-)

UGH about the work on the house.
Why do they mess with Brass. :(
