Yes, I do realize there are maybe three of us who still watch this show
For the few of you on my f'list who also play over on the Jim Brass Forum yes, it has temporarily imploded. Don't know when it will be back up but when it is, it might not be the same pretty.
Tonight was the season premier of CSI. Yes, I am one of the few who still watch this mess. I'll continue to watch as long as Paul Guilfoyle continues to renew his contract. I hope this is his last year and then he moves on to something new and different because I don't think I can take another season of "let's see how badly the writers have effed up this show" or, how I've come to want to punch Catherine Willows in the face. And hopefully, when Catherine goes, she'll drag her little whipped boy with her.
Based on the pics and the previews, you'd never have known Brass was in this as much as he was. With the exception of For Warrick, this might be the most we've ever seen of him in a season premier in a long time.
Episode starts off with a flashback to the finale and Catherine and Ray going over Brass' head to bring in Haskell. This is relevant because Brass is still smarting from Catherine going over his head and it plays out in this episode. Note to Catherine: Ray getting stabbed? All on you. So nut up and apologize to Brass.
I guess we're supposed to think we're going to Ray's funeral but even people who think CSI stands for the local trash pick up know that Ray doesn't die. It's the cop who Nick, the CSI, told to go check things out and then got shot. This happened because normally cops just stand around and do jack while the CSI's walk around with guns but no, this time Nick told the cop to you know, do his job and he died. Nick feels bad. Nick tries to attend the funeral but Brass has to tell him the family thinks he's slime and doesn't want him there. It's actually a very nice scene between Brass and Nick mostly because Brass tells Nick that he's been where Nick is and he knows how Nick feels. Except in Brass' case, he actually shot the cop who died so Brass wins at feeling bad. There's a very nice little shot of Brass sitting alone on the end of the row of seats with his head down, obviously not listening to the eulogy. Brass feels bad maybe for telling Nick to go sit in the hot car? Hope Nick cracks a window.
Brass gives the flag to the family, another nice scene, while Nick does his best to channel Grissom and sees roaches all over a floral delivery van and the ground. Long story short, bombs go off, people run, two cops die and Brass is pissed! He also jumps to conclusions and thinks Haskell is behind it all because apparently, homicide detectives are unable to detect without the guidance of a CSI. Btw, GE looks pretty good when he's mussed and not so pretty looking. Also, PG's hair is very silver on the sides. I love the silver but I miss the rest of his hair. I mean I really, really miss it. Oh, and interesting that Brass is at a cop's funeral and isn't wearing his uniform. He wore it to Warrick's funeral and Warrick wasn't even a cop. Nice black suit though.
Brass visits Ray in the hospital. I hope they build up the rapport between these two because Brass sorely misses Grissom. Brass needs an older guy pal. It looked like Catherine was going to be his pal but she became a bitch so she's out. Interesting how Ray tells Brass what he needs. Note to Ray, Brass doesn't work for you. Ray is in pain so Brass tells him about that little morphine button. Obviously, Brass is well acquainted with that button. Wait, is that another subtle reference? Must be my imagination. Brass goes to see Haskell. Brass has lost some of his mojo over the last couple of seasons because the writers are stupid idiots. Haskell notices this. He asks Brass "what's different about you?" He figures out that Jim is kinder and gentler. Haskell is a smart man. In a serial killer kind of way.
Oh look, Jim has found his way to the lab again. Someone must have left a trail for him to follow. Brass goes over there so he can sit with Ecklie and Catherine as they tune in Ray. This is because Ray is now GOD OF ALL CSI's. Brass finds out he is wrong about Haskell. What's new. Captain Jim Brass, the homicide detective, is never right because rule #1 of CSI? Never talk about CSI. Rule #2 is CSI is always smarter than detectives named Brass.
Amazing how a sim card that has been stuck in a phone in a dead body and then blown up can still spit out the winning phone number. This leads them to a marine who died in Afghanistan. The soldier's widow is in Brass' office. She is very pregnant and when Brass walks in and sees her, he does his "oh boy" expression. Brass tries to be nice when she's being snippy with him. He tells her he was a marine in Vietnam and lost a lot of friends. This is a very nice little bit of personal info about Brass. Can I say again that I miss Brass' hair? It's notable in this scene because he's very cute and would be even cuter with hair. Widow is still pissy so Brass cuts to the chase. During all this PG is really working his hands. Makes me think of something Michael J. Fox once said about how he controlled his Parkinson's while on camera.
Brass is still driving thepenis car Dodge Charger only this one is sort of a copperish color. Note to
airforce_chic he still drives like Barney Badass. Brass and Sara and a bunch of cops are getting ready to raid a community center because that's where the widow said she donated the cell phone that gave us the sim card that lived in the body that got blown up. A fight ensues. Sara clocks a woman and apparently someone clocks Brass. Not sure how that happens because when last we see him, he's standing in the back but he's got a shiner. Aw, poor Brass. This explains why he's cringing and holding his sunglasses as he and Ecklie butt heads on why they shouldn't let the nutjobs go. Ecklie actually listens to Jim. Good for Ecklie. I really like him as the undersheriff and wish he'd stick around more. I like the way he and Jim butt heads, which is much better than the way Brass and Catherine butt heads. It's hard to make a woman strong and tough without coming across as a bitch and unfortunately they've failed with Catherine. It happened in S5 as well (the first time I started to hate Catherine). The writers just don't know how to do strong, tough woman. Probably because they're all men and men think women have to be a bitch to be tough.
Brass wanders over to the lab again, this time sporting shades and a much more pronounced shiner. He asks for some good news and Nick tells him the shiner will go away in a week. Oh, Nicky, you so funny! Brass wants to talk to the kid they brought in. Catherine says "he's not going to talk to you." Can you say it any snottier, Catherine? Nick says he wants to talk to the kid about his brother, who they now believe is the bomber. Not sure why Brass is hesitant. It's not like CSI's don't constantly interview suspects. Kid is Justin Bieber. JB needs to stick to lip syncing and growing his hair because honestly, he has zero screen presence. Not very convincing in the role either. Nick finds out where the brother lives and goes there with new chick on CSI who gets to use her actual accent, unlike Louise Lombard. Nick and chick (honestly, I can't remember her name) find bomb makings and figure out where to find brother. They go there, catch the guy coming out of a store and Nick goes all full metal jacket on his ass. Well, actually it was his chest. Brother is dead. Catherine pops the hatchback of his car and finds photos of LVPD, the next target. PW, aka Vartann, tells her she just saved a lot of cops lives. By opening a hatchback and finding some pictures. Um yeah. PW, honey, I think it was Nick and the Chick who did that.
One thing I will give Bieber credit for: he does do a good creepy look. But damn his hair makes him look like he's got a Frankenstein's monster sized head. Maybe that's why he has to channel Donald Trump.
All in all, I did like this episode but mostly due to the amount of Brass screen time. I hope having Zuiker back means more focus on the originals but please, this thing between Catherine and Jim has to end. I admit to not being a fan of Sara in the past but I really liked her last season and in this episode. With Catherine being all bitchy, Sara is very calm and cool. I like that. I also like that they put Jorja back in the credits. I do think they missed a couple of huge opportunities to mention Grissom in this episode. Oh, and for those keeping count Nick cries in this episode. At least twice, maybe more. And his eyebrows sure are purty!

I'm looking forward to Katee Sackhoff too but I hope she doesn't take Brass' screen time. I'd really love it if they partnered the two of them up - but not in a shippy way.

We got to see a lot of the empathetic Brassman and it was all great. I thought they did a really great job with it, especially considering that PG was a late signee and this was probably pretty much written with the idea that he might not be back.
Just gotta say, I loved Brass in this one. He was so great with Nick and Ray and we got to see some of his old snarliness with Catherine. And when he took the shades off at the lab, we got to see sheepish Jim. And of course, PG played it all brilliantly.
I'm wondering if in the contract negotiations, PG said he wouldn't come back unless they gave him more quality screen time. If this is a taste of what is to come, I'm all in.
BTW, I sure thought Vartann's first name used to be Tony. I'd have to go back and rewatch old episodes to confirm but would've bet serious money on it. And he has turned up as Tony in some of the fanfic writing besides mine. But suddenly he is Lou? Is this another writer's blunder or am I way off base?
But wow, the Brassman is back!
All in all, I thought this was deeper and better written than most of the previous ...oh, two seasons. And we got to see some of the CSI effect camera work that I missed last season. I hope they continue the trend!

I also liked seeing Jim being very sympathetic towards Nick. Of course I also feel a little miffed that we never got to see that kind of aftermath for Jim with regards to shooting Bell or getting shot. But the nod to Nick that he knew what he was feeling was good.
Someone else's episode post that said "Brass is just - what" and I totally get what she means. He was part of the team for six maybe seven seasons, then all of a sudden Brass was no longer part of the team. He wasn't in the desert looking for Sara, he wasn't with them for go-carts or bowling, and until this episode, he was rarely ever in the lab. They completely alienated him. Now it seems like they are trying to bring him back into the team but he's not the same Brass. And if they now try to make him out to be the bad guy in this Catherine thing, that is so not cool. Especially since it's Catherine and PW vs. Brass.
What I've really come to appreciate is how well PG and WP played off each other because Brass seems to have lost a lot of his snark and spark when Grissom left. He used to butt heads and snark with Grissom. Now he just bends over backwards to kiss up to Ray. Brass should be just as pissed at him as he is at Catherine but I think he feels betrayed by Catherine because they were supposed to be friends who had each other's back. Grissom would have never done anything like that.
I'll take that bet on PW's first name. Tony was from one of the CSI Companion books. Fan fic writers latched onto it, ignoring that Greg called him Lou in the episode where the girl was killed by a pork chop because they liked Tony better. Until then, he was always mentioned by his last name.
Anyway, overall, I agree that this was a much better Brass episode than I thought it would be and hopefully that's due to Zuiker's return. I just hope he and Catherine come to terms because I do not want to see Brass made to be the bad guy just because CM likes Catherine more.

Yes, I did notice that his driving skills are still there! Also amazed at the amount of Jim in the episode. I still wonder why I tune in each week, and then I remember why: Jim.
I have to say my favorite line in the whole episode was about using morphine. I don't think the writers wrote that in reference to a past traumatic experience, but in my little world, it was.
I just kind of ignore what Cath has to say to anyone, especially Jim, these days. I just don't understand this pissing contest the writers have between them now.

I ask myself the same question, especially given all the "very special Catherine" episodes we're probably going to get this season. But as long as PG sticks around, I will too.
As for that morphine comment, I know I'm giving the writers too much credit but I'm with you in that little world, especially given that we've gotten so little about what Jim went through after he got shot.

I haven't seen any CSI yet this season! How awful is that? I've found myself remembering it was thursday night, once Im in bed, and Thursday is over. *Pout* Im going to have to do some catching up.
Sorry to hear about the site! I admit I haven't been around the boards lately. Just time issues, or was there actually a problem?
Loved your recap, even though I haven't seen the episode. I got a good few giggles out of reading it. Good to see you so much lately!
NaBloPoMo? Its next month... **Tempting sing-song**

There have only been three episodes and with the exception of the premier, you really haven't missed anything. So far it's been all about Ray, Nick and Catherine. When you do catch up, skip Blood Moon. No Brass whatsoever.
The site server crashed and while it should be back eventually, it might not have been backed up so everything that was on there might be lost.
And I'm thinking I might be in for NaBloPoMo. Work should ease up by then so hopefully, I'll have more time then.
