Snowly Shit!

They were predicting 18-24" inches of snow from this storm and it's looking like we're going to get every bit of it.

The snow is very wet, very heavy, and weighing down the trees and shrubs. My Willow tree, which is usually kept trimmed so the branches don't hit anyone in the face along the sidewalk, is touching the ground. We're supposed to get the bulk of the snow overnight and it's not supposed to stop until tomorrow evening. The power went out for a couple of minutes around 7:30 and that inspired me to charge up everything I own that can be charged. We have underground power cables and I know my dad would love to get in the truck and drive a generator over but we don't usually lose power. Even during Hurricane Isabel, we kept the power on until just after midnight (that was well into the storm) and came back up the next morning. Oooh, the heavy snow bands are moving in--2" of snow an hour. While the power was out and the house was dark, there was this bright flash, like lightning. I thought it was the power trying to come back up but no, it was lightning. We were having thundersnow!

My friend's husband has this tradition of making brownies during a big snow storm. I thought that was a pretty yummy tradition so I started it during the December storm. Brownies are cooling and no doubt will be consumed by the time I post this.

My boss and her husband went to the Caps game tonight. They drove in from the Herndon area so I bet they will have stories to tell. The Caps won and scored 5 goals so at least they get wings for their trouble.

Since I was dying to go out in the snow and I did need to check the mail, I decided to go for a little walkabout. I love so many things about snow: the way the light reflects off of it, making it seem like it's daylight out, how quiet everything is and how what sound there is, carries, plowing through virgin snow in my awesome snow boots. It looks like they made a swipe of the drive with the snow plow but the snow was still deep enough that a couple of cars were having a hard time getting going. I knocked some of the snow off the willow branches so they aren't on the ground any more (although the ground is rising to meet the branches) and while I was outside, I shoveled the 50+ ft of sidewalk. I wanted a benchmark for in the morning. Right now the snow is about mid-shin on me. I'll be curious to see how high it is tomorrow. Plus, it's a helluva lot easier to shovel a foot of heavy snow than two feet of heavy snow.

Mmmm, brownies....

that's kind of awesome. or maybe it's the just the name...

brownies. yum. warm and gooey while it's cold and snowy. very nice combination.

i've had multiple people tell me, "urmila, do NOT drive tomorrow," including my dad's boss. because after the last storm, you can bet i'm not going anywhere.

stay warm and enjoy :o)

Wait! Isabelle! I did that one, too! We didn't have power for, like, ten days! So you're somewhere in Virginia?! Where are you? I went to school in Roanoke and live (might be living again) in Williamsburg when I come back home.

I love snow too. You are getting to see a lot more of it this year than I ever have. And, yeah, whatever diet or foodplan I might be on goes out the window during a snow...it just makes if so much better to have yummy, yummy things and watch the snow.

I hope you have a great time.

I might have enjoyed this any other weekend... ;)

I'm pleased to have kept power too. As crappy as this house is, that's one good thing about it.

Looking forward to going out later and taking pics!
