My Favorite Year Part V
Yes, this is the final post about my favorite year. Hey, it was good for stretching out this blog thing. I was a little stumped for ideas otherwise. But just to add a little Olympic note: tomorrow night, Russia vs. Canada. Cannot wait!
Oh, and Tucker seems to be coming down with a cold. He's been sneezing non-stop since Friday night. And if it is a cold, no doubt the other two will get it too. Joy.
So here it is, the last trip to California.
The last trip to CA was a little long weekend my friend, S, and I took to L.A. to visit a co-worker and her hubby who had moved to Huntington Beach for his job (they've since moved to Miami, Madrid and now Saudi Arabia). His office was in Long Beach aka Miami Beach. Somewhere around his office was where they filmed exterior shots for CSI: Miami. He has pics of them filming.
S and I decided we wanted to have some fun in the sun so we rented a convertible Mustang and zipped around Hollywood while we waited for K do get home from work. We decided to hit Belmont Shore because even though I'd been there about a half dozen times, S had never been. And of course we had to go to Open Sesame yet again. We stayed at K's house where, later that night, the regaled us with stories of movie stars they'd rubbed elbows with. K's hubby loves to look for them. It's like a sport to him.
The next day we took off for this place called Sportmen's Lodge over in Studio City. When I took the pic of Warren Stevens, Terry Becker and Diana Basehart the previous month, they asked for a copy and I promised I'd send them one (Terry teasingly said I'd probably paste it all over the internet but I have not). Unfortunately, I didn't have Terry or Warren's addresses. They were having this autograph thing at the Lodge and Terry and Warren were there so I dragged my friends along. The terrified looks on their faces when we walked in was hilarious! S called it a people zoo and she was right. This was the place where my friend, K, nearly got mowed over by Rose Marie (of Dick Van Dyke fame) on her way to the restroom. We saw Terry and a couple of other actors from the show. I talked to Terry for a bit while S and K hung behind. Terry told me a little known bit of info about Richard. I met Terry's wife and then we wandered over to see Warren. He was way over in a corner but on the way we passed so many actors from TV shows I grew up watching. Unfortunately, S and K were dying of embarrassment so we found Warren, they got to meet him and of course, he was such a gentleman. Oh, I forgot to mention that we had to change the day of the lunch with Terry and Warren at Diana's because Warren was going to an event at the Hollywood Bowl. He was escorting Doris Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond). 80 years old and the guy still gets out. Go Warren!
Anyway, on the way out, we passed this table where this guy was sitting all alone. He was kind of scuzzy looking (scraggly beard growth, hair unkempt, clothes kind of messy) and kept asking us if he could show us a card trick. All of a sudden my friend S goes, "that's the guy who plays the doctor on Murder, She Wrote". I didn't know him from that. I remembered him as the crazed commander who drove a shuttle craft (or something like that) into the giant floating cornucopia on Star Trek. It was William Windom. I'm sure he was very nice but dude came off as very creepy!
After we left Sportsmen's Lodge, we saw the signage of In and Out and made a beeline to the best burger ever! After inhaling a #2 (Cheeseburger, fries, drink), we zipped over to the Farmer's Market, had Tapas and wine at a Spanish bar, then walked over to The Grove. I, of course, am in awe because The Grove at Farmers Market is right next to CBS Studios. I'm also remembering the Hollywood episodes of "I Love Lucy" because they went to the Farmer's Market too. If I'd been into CSI back then, I'd have been on the lookout for PG. He's been sighted several times hanging out at the Farmer's Market.
The next day we decided to put the top down and take off for Santa Barbara. Thelma was driving, Louise was in the passenger seat, and K, wearing a scarf that made her look like a Babushka, was in the back seat. Unfortunately, it drizzled on us most of the way. But as S said, if you drive 55, you don't feel the rain. She was mostly right. We had sun again once we got past Malibu but it mostly disappeared once we got to Santa Barbara. Didn't stop us though. We made a quick stop at Diana's so I could drop a few things off then we headed to Arroyo Burro Beach Park. There's this nice little bar right on the beach so we sat outside and had a drink. We did a little shopping, a little sightseeing, then we went up State Street to this very cool restaurant. The place was crowded so we sat at the bar. By this time, I'm not feeling so good. I have a sore throat and I want to keep drinking liquids. By the time dinner came, I couldn't taste the food. By the time we got back to Huntington Beach (I think it was around 1am), I was sick. Can you say worst sinus infection ever?
Luckily, Suzanne and I were leaving the next day but have you ever flown with your ears already stopped up? By the time we landed at Dulles, I couldn't hear. And my ears didn't pop for three days.
Despite the way it ended, this was definitely one of the best trips ever! In a few years, K and her hubby will be moving back to VA and S and I are already planning to rent another convertible and hit the Eastern Shore for a girl's weekend. Only this time I hope it doesn't rain because driving faster than the drops fall? Yeah, that only works while the car is moving.
