Here comes the candle to light you to bed

I'm a little late sending this but thank you to everyone who sent cards, good thoughts and hugs after the passing of my stepfather. It really does mean a lot. Mom has been doing okay. One of the things that gave her a lot of comfort was coming home the same day John passed away and as she made the turn for their house, she looked up and in the clear blue sky, the entrails from two jets had made a cross. She said that was a sign from John to let her know he's alright and she can move on.

My thoughts, such as they are

This is me rambling about a variety of things plus, there's a Tucker update.

I sort of miss the daily blogging. Okay, not really. )

New Discoveries in the Month of July

Usually over the summer, I don't go anywhere. I like to do my traveling in the Spring and then take a beach trip in the Fall. However, I really like it when things change and take me out of my normal pattern. This year I went to Denver the first week of July and then to Portland, OR the last week of July (yes, I know I still need to post about that trip--details will be forthcoming). Along the way I made a few discoveries. Some of them probably won't be new to you and you will laugh and point at me but I'm an INTJ so it takes me a little longer to process stuff. Don't judge me.

I swear there's a reason for this

First of all, my Brass/Catherine fic Blame it on the Margaritas has been posted over on Geekfiction. I can't believe I actually got it done. I'm usually not a fast writer. In my other fandom it would take me 6 months to a year to complete a story. Oh, well. I'm not complaining.

We've had T-storms on and off today with the threat of more. I'm happy. So far it's actually been sort of quiet but I expect that will change once the sun goes down.

I did my family duty and called Grandma today. It's her 84th birthday. When I was a kid, I always thought it was so cool that her birthday was on the 4th because she got watermelon and homemade ice cream and an awesome fireworks display. I sent her flowers yesterday then called today to make sure she got them. She's doing really well but dang, she does talk a lot.

Odds and Ends

This is really going to be a post about nothing.

I think I've figured out that my inability to see certain graphics is related to ZoneAlarm. I can see dead people pictures just after I update the firewall then when I re-boot, it all goes away.

How bad is my life when the greatest thing that happened today was that I got my Blackberry to finally recognize the Bluetooth headset? Yeah, I have no purpose. Life did look up a little though because when I got home this evening, there was a notice that Fed Ex had tried to deliver a package from Charity Folks. Yep, it was Paul Guilfoyle's hockey jersey. So, after a little jaunt to the Fed Ex office (I'd like to send them my love for staying open until 9pm) and ogling the really cute guy behind the counter, I left with my new but completely useless purchase. It's now hanging on the door to my computer room. Hockey jersies are very cool. Hockey jersies with Paul Guilfoyle's signature on them are even cooler.

I still haven't started my fic for the Ficathon. Well, I've sort of started it but I'm afraid it's going to be craptastic. I really want to write on the Brass/Sofia fic but I've told myself I can't do it until the other fic is done.

I hate the 4th of July. I don't actually hate what it stands for but I hate that Virginia allows the sale of fireworks and that the trollkins who live in my neighborhood shoot them off from now until January. Last year I came out to find pop bottle rocket debris all over the hood of my car. I really want to buy a house with a garage. Instead, I think I'll just go to a movie on the 4th. It's cheaper.

Boring Personal Stuff

Since the consensus is that the background wallpaper can't be seen, I've taken it down. Nothing worse than just seeing an ear. Now I'm trying something new and different so this is mostly just a rambling test post.

Oh, and ugh! I volunteered to write my career story for all those lucky grads from the College of Arts and Sciences at my university. Can I just say that I never intended to have a career in Business Management? I really wanted to go into Criminal Justice but when the day came to pick my major, my stupid school didn't have a Criminal Justice program and I would have had to transfer. FYI, I didn't put a lot of thought into going to college or what I wanted to be when I grew up. I just went because it seemed to be the next step and because all my friends were going. I somehow ended up with a B.A. in Political Science, minors in German and History and a career in what essentially is Finance. Go figure.

Firefox is driving me crazy. For some time on my main PC, I've not been able to see certain pics. GIFs mostly, I think. I can see them on my baby Laptop and it also has Firefox but I can't figure out for the life of me why. Then last night I could suddenly see the pics on main PC but today, they're gone again. WTF?

I've decided that work gives me a potty mouth. I cuss a lot. I say the fuck word a whole lot. Work is evil. I have a friend at work who's fairly new and just the other day, she said the four magic words that we all wait for new employees to say: "I hate my job". Then when we congratulated her on getting to that special place all us seasoned workers are (cussing, cynical malcontents), she said the fuck word. Work corrupts new employees.

So can anyone see my wallpaper? I can see it just fine and it's really pretty cause, well, Brass is pretty (and my friend [livejournal.com profile] inamberclad made it). But I have a large monitor set at 1280x1024. Some of you may just see some sort of dark something and are secretly (or openly, if that's your thing) wondering WTF.

I must write this weekend. I've been working my butt off (you wouldn't know it to see my butt) and have no time or energy to do any writing but I've finally been giving some thought to writing and that's more than I've done in weeks. Oh, yeah, and there's that little Geekfiction fic-a-thon I signed up for so I better get my butt in gear. WTF was I thinking?

I think I had more to say but I can't think of what it was. Oh, well, WTF.

Where was I?

Ok so this LJ thing is new to me and well, I'm old but not that old that I start reading actual directions. Hell, my work experience consisted of trial and error. Yeah, 4 years of college, fluency in two foreign languages, ability to argue politics and world history (mostly English) with myself and what do I do? Go and get a job in Finance! Well, technically it's called Business Management but it's still numbers, people. I grew up loathing numbers. Oops, tangent over. Sorry.

Anyway, I hate reading big thick books that tell me how to turn on or off something. I usually start messing around with it and eventually I'll figure it out. Of course, all I can generally do is turn something on and off but I can program my DVD recorder, set a clock on anything electronic and I did manage to set up my surround sound speakers so that sound comes in well, in surround. Sorry, tangenting again. Anyway again, I'm slowly figuring out this LJ thing. I'm trying to figure out cuts and I've been changing what my journal looks like. It's kind of fun and I feel so twenty-something.
